Concealer Favourites

26 May 2016

Concealer. A staple in most make up bags. But why are there so many different types? How do you even apply them? I've got you covered with my top favourite concealers, my best tips on how to pick your perfect concealer and how to apply it to get your face on fleek.

Choosing your perfect shade of concealer can be as much of a challenge as finding the right foundation. Pay attention to the description of your chosen concealer. If the formula promises a brightening effect it's likely it will be better suited to cover dark circles and perk up the skin moreso than camouflaging problem areas.

It's useful to get yourself a concealer palette if you require it for several purposes. That way you can mix and match shades to suit each area of the face for different purposes.

Make Up Revolution come to the colour correcting rescue with their 8 shade Corrector Palette. With lilac, pink, yellow, green and salmon tones you'll be able to even out problem areas in an instant.

Got to have budge proof concealer on a budget? No problem. Seventeen's Stay Time Concealer promises up to 18 hours of wear, blends like a dream and gives full coverage so it's sure to bestow wrath upon pesky zits! Its liquid formula won't sit in fine lines or dry patches so it's great for drier skin types.

MAC's ProLongwear Concealer is the go hard type with a full coverage, waterproof, transfer-resistant formula. If you need a concealer that can stand up to all elements, this is it. Very potent. A little goes a very long way and offers 15 hours of wear time. Amazing stuff.

Need a multi-purpose concealer? Go for Rimmel's Lasting Finish Concealer. A fantastic full coverage creamy formula with a comfortable, lightweight feel. You can use this to hide blemishes and dark circles. It blends beautifully and lasts up to an incredible 25 hours (not sure why anyone would need to wear concealer that long but I can safely say I've worn this all day long and it has still looked fantastic at the end of the day).

Want to go lightweight? If your skin is fairly free of problems (lucky you!) and you just want to add a little something, try MAC's Select Cover Up. A liquid formula concealer with a more muted, natural finish that stays put all day long. Just like MAC's Pro Longwear this is also potent and a little goes a long way. If you go one shade lighter this doubles well as a subtle highlight.

Convenience comes in Urban Decay's 24/7 Concealer Pencil. An ideal way to swipe on some natural coverage and go.

Ever wondered why your concealer doesn't quite stay put or look the way you need it to? Of course this could be for several reasons beyond your application method but different methods of applying concealer certainly serve their purpose. If one method doesn't work for you there are plenty more to try out. Find what works for you. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' method.

I have a couple of favourite methods which work well for any type of concealer.
The first is a dome shaped face brush. My favourite is the ELF Flawless Concealer brush. As well as being cruelty free and vegan, it also blends product flawlessly for an airbrushed finish.

Make Up Revolution's Ultra Metal foundation brush not only brings rose gold chic to your vanity table but it has secret duo function. You can actually use this to apply your concealer as well as foundation. Its structure comes to a point which enables you to reach underneath the eyes and the crevices of the face perfectly when applying foundation. So why not use it for concealer too?

I love a beauty blender sponge. I use Lottie London's beauty blender sponge which is very budget friendly. (I would never personally pay anymore than £6-£7 for a sponge!) I use the tip of the sponge to reach the under eye area and bounce the concealer over the redness on my cheeks with the opposite end.  Flawless!

What's your favourite concealer and how do you apply it?
