Being Vegan: 6 Months In
12 September 2016
In March this year, I wrote about my transition to veganism. Find out more about that here
It may also be helpful to visit my post on my health conditions if you're new to my blog. You can see this post here
I've been vegan around 6 months now and I felt it was time for an update!
Going vegan was one of the best decisions I have ever made morally and ethically.
It has, in many ways, improved my health conditions. I suffer with debilitating menstrual conditions. I won't sit here and pretend that going vegan made all of that disappear. It hasn't and it won't. Chronic conditions don't go away with a change of diet but mine have certainly improved.
I have not been physically sick as a result of my Dysmenorrhea (painful periods) in months and that's something I could NEVER have said before. (Even throughout my time using birth control pills I would still get the vomiting!) My PMDD has improved and my IBS is much more manageable. I do still suffer with both but much less severely.I still need medication for my conditions but I'm able to reduce the time I take some of it.
I shudder to think how badly I would still be suffering now if I had not made this change to my diet. (Whilst diet won't cure my conditions, it certainly can make them worse if I eat badly!) Before I became vegan I was having monthly trips to the hospital at 3am and dreading every time I got my period to the point it gave me severe anxiety.
Now I have months when I can physically function on day ONE and TWO of menstruating and that NEVER happened before. Do I still suffer with period pain? Yes. It has kept me awake at night a few times. BUT for once laying down with a heat pad or hot water bottle offers some relief instead of very little or none at all. I also find painkillers are able to help me much more now that I'm not throwing them back up all the time.
I wish I had known a long time ago just how much this lifestyle would help my menstrual cycle and maybe I could have saved myself as much suffering as I went through.
I've been discovering so many new ways to cook and lots of awesome vegan alternatives.
Do you want a recipe post for this chocolate vegan mug cake?
Overall, I'm very happy on this lifestyle and I'm beyond glad I decided to do this!
