My apologies for being MIA for so long. If you follow me on Twitter you'll know where I've been. If you don't, be sure to keep up with me here so you never miss out. (I run polls all the time to give you a chance to have your say on what type of content I post!)
Drugstore mascaras, in my personal experience, have proved far superior to their higher end counterparts. Consequently, this has led me to favour them for the most part (hey, Urban Decay's Perversion is a strong contender, okay?!). However, recently I promised myself I'd put my bias aside to see if my mind could be changed on this matter.
With that, I give you two mascaras. Two price points. Head to head.
GOSH Xtreme Mascara was a spur of the moment purchase. I needed a new mascara and this grabbed my attention as I poured over the zillions of mascara tubes in Superdrug. In the midst of squinting at descriptions in tiny fonts telling me what type of lashes I'd supposedly have, I stumbled upon this one and its claim to offer me the very attributes I desire for my lashes had me sold.
It retails for approximately £8.45 but I was charged just £2.50 at the till. I was assured this was correct and I later discovered why this was so cheap (be sure to read until the end of this post to find out).
Upon using this it swiftly became the perfect cheaper dupe for the Urban Decay Perversion mascara. It gave me full, fluttery, volumised lashes without flaking, smudging or irritation. Just the way I like 'em. The bristles on the brush vary in length and they hugged my lashes perfectly. The more I used it the more I loved it.
And then! Behold! A spanner in the works! Right after I purchased the GOSH mascara I was gifted the IT Cosmetics Super Hero mascara. I admit I was insanely curious to try It Cosmetics since they're predominantly a US based brand. Ordering from America is kind of a nightmare given how expensive custom charges are so having the chance to finally try this brand was pretty exciting.
This mascara promised all sorts. Volumised, thickened lashes. Super amounts of elasticity and length. Care for your lashes in the form of strengthening biotin, collagen, proteins and peptides. I mean that was a lot of false hope.
It retails for $24 (roughly £18 according to Google's converter) so this stuff is not cheap!
When it came to using this for the first time it was all rather anti-climatic. Now, I have naturally long lashes so length isn't really a big issue for me. My main #mascaragoal is achieving fullness and super volumised lashes. Enough to make you question if I'm wearing falsies. But this made my lashes look so ordinary it was painfully disappointing.
The brush narrows towards the tip which is useful for reaching smaller lashes but honestly it couldn't do less for me if it tried.
They were lifted, separated and a little fluttery, sure. But there was a lack of volume, a lack of thickness and fullness.
After all the excitement and the promises I was horrifically let down. I tried to make it work, I really did. But truthfully, I wear this and I feel like I'm having a 'boring lashes' kinda day.
The infuriating downside to all this is I believe GOSH have now discontinued this mascara (!!!) because I've found I'm only able to get this via Amazon and I don't enjoy buying make-up online so I guess I'll be on a second search for a new fave once this runs out. And that explained why it was so cheap. Sad face.
And I'm afraid my bias toward drugstore mascaras is stronger than ever.
