Review: Fenty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation

23 November 2017

As someone who struggles to find a compatible foundation in the right shade, I was excited and hopeful about Fenty. Launched earlier this year by Robyn Rihanna Fenty, this inclusive line of foundations carries a whopping 40 shades.

My combination, fair skin with neutral undertones is a little temperamental. I have very 'teenage' skin due to having Polycystic Ovary Syndrome which can change the behaviour of the skin through its affect on hormones in the body. I have dry patches that flake, I have areas that break out and become slightly oily and I have plenty of peach fuzz #hairymary.

I enjoy fuller coverage foundations because my skin's appearance can look quite naturally red/textured with the affects of my condition. Plus I see no point in wearing make up unless it's going to make me look flawless. That's just me, fam.

The advantage of a line carrying 40 shades is there is bound to be one for most of us in it. The disadvantage is not being able to see said shades in real life (the brand is only currently sold online in the UK), so, for now, there's a lot of guessing work. I don't enjoy buying foundations or concealers online for this reason.

It promises a soft, matte, filtered finish with buildable coverage. But would there be a shade for me? And, if so, would it work? Only one way to find out. After a lot of googling swatches of various shades (under the 'light' category on the website), I ordered shade 120.

I have neutral-ish toned fair skin . 120 is quite nice on me but it does carry a little more yellow to it than I personally prefer and require. In the swatch from the website (above) you can see it looks far more pink toned than it actually is (or at least how it looks on me). Next time I think I would consider 110.

Coverage is medium with one layer and fuller upon applying two or three. Best application achieved with a beauty blender sponge or my Make Up Revolution oval face brush. It gives a very lovely airbrushed finish once applied.

Feels comfortable on the skin and kept my complexion matte for around 5 hours by itself before my skin became visibly oily. With a setting powder and spray it naturally held longer and stronger. This was one disappointing factor for me as I feel it should have held up a bit longer on its own given its price point. I also noticed this clung to the dryer areas of my face extremely easily so I would highly recommend wearing a moisturiser and primer underneath it.

For those reasons I'd reserve this foundation for a special night out. I don't feel it works well enough to be suitable for every day wear.

Overall, a nice foundation with good coverage but I'm hesistant to say this is a new favourite. I think this is a great starting point for the brand but there's definitely improvements to be made.
